general tests

Standard & Potency Testing

During the cultivation process bacteria, mold, and other microbial contaminants may be introduced to the flower and other materials. These contaminants are harmful to consumers and need to be detected before any product enters the market. Depending on the type of product, this panel will cover Total Yeast/Mold Count, Salmonella, Shiga-Toxin producing E.coli, Candida Albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aerobic Bacteria, Bile Tolerant Gram-Negative Bacteria, and/or Aspergillus Flavus, Fumigatus, Terreus, and Niger. SV Labs utilizes RT-PCR & Plating techniques for this test. Our lab uses biomerieux platform.

Pesticide Analysis

Pesticides, herbicides and insecticides are used in the growing process to help protect the plants, but those chemicals can also be harmful to consumers. Using the Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) & the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS/MS), we can identify and quantify what pesticides are present. Using both techniques we are able to protect our clients more by significantly reducing the risk of a false positive. We identify over 60 different pesticides that could be potentially hazardous to consumers.

Foreign Matter Inspection

This test is used to detect presence of any foreign matter or other contaminants that may compromise safety testing. SV labs conducts a thorough visual inspection for dirt, glass, mammal hair, insect matter and mold to identify foreign material to ensure all samples are clean and free of contaminants.

Water Activity

This Test analyzes the moisture content and water activity levels of plant material. Water Activity is used to determine the propensity of a product to grow mold or fungus affecting the shelf stability. This test performed on a Rotronic Hygrolab Water activity meter to detect environments that grow Yeast, Mold and Bacteria. Moisture content is determined by a dedicated moisture analyzer, producing fast and accurate results.

Heavy Metals Screening

Heavy Metals are typically introduced through soil, water, or low-grade fertilizers. When cultivating cannabis, everything in the environment can affects the plant and flower produced. SV Labs tests for presence Heavy metal which include Arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and total Chromium (Cr). All of these heavy metals can cause serious health issues if ingested.

SV Labs utilizes an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICPMS) to test for four heavy metals in cannabis products. This high quality instrument allows us to accurately measure the levels of these harmful heavy metals down to parts per trillion, which is several orders of magnitude lower than current regulations.

Terpene Profiling

Terpenes are the naturally occurring aromatic compounds in cannabis that contribute to its unique smell and flavor. They have many additional functions in the plant and can produce a range of therapeutic and mood-altering effects in consumers. SV Labs offers Terpene profile testing, this way consumers can be as informed as possible of the effects of certain strains. SV Labs uses Gas Chromatography to test for the most commonly found terpenes in cannabis, which include: Alpha Pinene, Camphene, Carene, (+) -4- carene, D-Limonene, p-Cymene, Ocimene-2, Eucalyptol, gamma Terpinene,Ocimene 1, beta Myrcene, beta Pinene, 3-Terpinolene, Linalool, Isopulegol, Geraniol, Caryphyllene, Caryophyllene Oxide, Humulene, Nerolidol, Guaiol, and alpha Bisabolol.

SV labs conducts a thorough visual inspection for dirt, glass, mammal hair, insect matter and mold to identify foreign material to ensure all samples are clean and free of contaminants.

Standard & Potency Testing

$60.00

Potency testing is used to find out the strength of a base product such as trim, flower, concentrates, or extracts. Knowing the potency of a product is necessary for proper package labeling. Consumers also use potency for indication on what type of effect that they will experience when they consume the product. The potency of Cannabis is based on two major chemical profiles, THCs and CBDs. SV Labs quantifies potency content for all the essential cannabinoids using High Performance Liquid Chromatography with UV detectors. Our Potency test provides results for THCA, D9THC, D8THC, THCV, CBD, CBDA, CBN, CBG, and CBC in mg/g, as well as percentages for each product’s cannabinoid content.

Residual Solvents Screening

$35.00

Various chemical solvents are used in several types of extractions to produce cannabis-derived products, and many of the solvents are hazardous when inhaled or ingested. When processed incorrectly or incompletely, residual amounts of chemical solvents used during the extraction process can remain in the final product and can cause a slew of health concerns when ingested, especially after being combusted and inhaled. Residual Solvent Testing will indicate if further processing is needed prior to consumption or sale.

SV Laboratories uses Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry with HeadSpace sampling (GC-MS) to test cannabis products for 20 commonly found Residual Solvents including benzene, n-Butane, chloroform, ether, and ethyl acetate. We also use GC-MS to assess whether the product meets or fails to comply with current regulations and to ensure all products fall under the "Tolerable Daily Intake” limits.

Heavy Metals Screening

$100.00

Mycotoxin Detection

$35.00

Mycotoxins are produced by certain types of mold. Exposure can result in serious health concerns, particularly when that consumption is chronic. These toxins are a prevalent concern for patients with weakened or compromised immune systems. SV Labs tests for five mycotoxins using Electro Spray Ionization LC-MS/MS: Ochratoxin A, Aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2.
